Planning Department Summer Internship


The RPCGB is committed to providing internship opportunities for those interested in the planning field. The Planning Department is offering an internship for 1-2 people starting in May 2019. This is a completive selection process and applications will be accepted from March 1 – 29, 2019.   The internship is for a full-time internship (40 hours per week) for 10–12 weeks during the summer. The position will provide the opportunity to gain experience in community and transportation planning.

Possible Tasks:

  • Provides support to a team of community planners
  • Assists staff in collecting and preparing data for various planning projects
  • Conducts field work, collects parcel data and searches land records
  • Prepares maps and planning reports
  • Assists planning staff at public meetings and open houses
  • Conducts basic office functions as needed, such as data entry and file management
  • Works with GIS data

Typical Knowledge Requirements:

  • Basic understanding of planning principles
  • Knowledge of computer software programs, including GIS

Typical Skills Requirements:

  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Strong research and analytical skills
  • Motivated self-started able to work independently
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment
  • Flexibility and desire to work on varying planning projects

Preference will be given to students currently enrolled in a graduate-level planning or planning related curriculum. Please provide no longer than a one-page letter stating why you would like the internship and what areas of planning that interest you.
