The Regional Planning Commission of Greater Birmingham (RPCGB), on behalf of the Birmingham Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO), is seeking proposals from qualified consultants to develop a Birmingham Regional Active Transportation Plan. The Birmingham Regional Active Transportation Plan is intended to help establish a strategic vision for improving walking and bicycling opportunities, and will serve as a resource for the MPO and its member governments to plan, fund, and ultimately provide facilities to maximize opportunities for improved walking and bicycling activity in the greater Birmingham region in the future. The existing Active Transportation element within the MPO’s 2040 Regional Transportation Plan focuses heavily on policy and guidance for the region’s cities and counties. This Birmingham Regional Active Transportation Plan is intended to focus more on identifying projects rather than on policy, and will concentrate on a regional network of trails and bicycle facilities.
The Birmingham Regional Active Transportation Plan will serve as the Active Transportation element of the MPO’s 2045 Regional Transportation Plan, and therefore will provide the basis by which future funding priorities of the MPO are established for bicycle and trail accommodations within Jefferson, Shelby and portions of St. Clair and Blount Counties.
