Expand Your Mind
Dr. Despina Stavrinos, Director of the UAB TRIP Laboratory, is happy to announce a two-week transportation science summer workshop for rising high school sophomores, juniors, and seniors. Through this workshop, future scientists will be exposed to attention, cognition, and developmental psychology in the context of driving, and use scientific inquiry to address the real-world problem of inattention while driving.
This once in a lifetime opportunity is offered free of charge. A brown bag lunch is provided each day.
Science of Distracted Driving
The two-week summer workshop, The Science of Distracted Driving, involves active learning and group projects. Students will design, develop, and disseminate a small research study, and present their research at a poster exposition. Research posters will be evaluated by TRIP Lab graduate and undergraduate research assistants with prizes awarded, as appropriate. Parents and UAB Faculty are invited to this exposition offering parents and students an opportunity to network, and Faculty an opportunity to recruit bright students to their university and/or laboratory.
Scientific Inquiry + Education
This workshop focuses on the use of scientific inquiry to address real-world problems and education on the dangers of inattention while driving. Qualified students will have the opportunity to engage in all aspects of the research process, and observe state-of-the-art research techniques, courtesy of the TRIP Lab, including a driving simulator, eye-tracking equipment, and reduction of complex data using computer based applications. The future scientists taking part in this workshop will experience research from the other side of the table by participating in validated experimental protocols developed for previous studies.
The future scientists will have the opportunity to participate in the AAA Teen Defensive Driving Course, as well as experience hands-on laboratory work, instructor-developed demonstrations, visits and interactions with the TRIP Lab, and hear guest lectures from AAA of Alabama and the Regional Planning of Commission of Greater Birmingham.
The Science of Distracted Driving Workshop will be held at the UAB TRIP Laboratory, 916 19th Street South, Birmingham, AL. Apply for the workshop online by April 28, 2017 at www.bit.ly/TRIPWorkshop2017 . For additional information, please contact Mariah Stasiak, TRIP Lab Manager, at firstname.lastname@example.org or 205.975.9440.
This Summer Science Workshop is brought to you free of charge thanks to the cooperation of the Regional Planning Commission of Greater Birmingham, the UAB Department of Psychology, and the UAB TRIP Laboratory
